Your Life, My Thoughts

Advice from a know-it-all

    Crazy/Beautiful

    Q. I’ve been dating a girl for several months. Recently I’ve come to believe that she might be insane. Not insane wacky, but insane insane. An example: she told me there was a live rat inside my kitchen trash can; I examined the trash can and, finding it rat-free, asked why she thought there’d been a rat inside it. “I just got a really strong sense that a rat was in there. Kind of like a premonition?” And that’s just one example.

But she’s also really insanely hot. So should I break things off and try to find someone more sane, but (almost certainly) much less good-looking? How crazy is too crazy? Would it be unethical to find a second, supplementary gf to even things out, maybe one who’s homely, but level-headed and rational?

    Thanks!

    A. There’s a lot more to life than being with someone that’s really, really, ridiculously good looking; especially if that hot girl is cray cray.  If your girlfriend’s bouts of insanity have crossed over from being cute idiosyncrasies to frustrating flare ups, then yes, I would urge you to get out while you still can.

Your exit strategy, however, needs an extensive overhaul.  You’re seeing someone that’s unstable and you want to surreptitiously add a side chick to this equation? Right, because that will end so well.  Psycho will go psycho if she catches on. Ugly girl, if she has half the sense that you’re looking for, will not trust you to not cheat on her. The best way to end things in your current relationship is to tell your gf you don’t want to date her anymore.  It will suck, but your alternative would be disastrous.

On a final note, I’d be remiss if I didn’t stick up for my fellow pretty people and suggest that you forget what Jimmy Soul said; homely folk can cause as much strife in a relationship as attractive ones.
