    Much “I Do” About Nothing

    Q. Is it outrageous to go stag to a friend’s wedding if you’ve been offered a plus 1? i’m getting the impression that i’ll look like a loser if i show up without a date. when did weddings become adult prom?

    -Christine

    A. Adult prom is actually what you’d call a 10-year high school reunion. I tend to view weddings as really fancy birthday parties. A quinceañera to the 10th power, if you will.  So with that in mind, going stag doesn’t seem all that outrageous.  A plus one is only an offer not an obligation. There’s no need to get all neurotic and desperate over this, à la Debra Messing in The Wedding Date/every role she plays. Besides, the bride and groom will probably appreciate having to pay for one less plate at the reception.

When all else fails, take a few tips from Coleen Atwater and make the situation all about yourself. No one will judge you for traveling solo after you’ve delivered a couple backhanded compliments about the bride’s dress and set your centerpiece on fire. They’ll just judge you for upstaging the bride.
