Blue’s Pills of Happiness
Q. Hi YLMT,
Any advice for a broken heart? I’ve tried giving in to it: crying, moping, eating more than my share of chocolate. I’ve tried moving past it too, working out and going out with friends. But nothing I do helps, and every love song I hear gets me choked up. Worst of all, I can’t get past this nagging hope that maybe, just maybe, he’ll change his mind and come back. It’s torture. What do I do? - Blue.
A. Oh Blue,
That is one downer of a question, but therein lies the solution. Downers with a capital D! And lets not forget our good friends Uppers and SSRIs. As a resident of one of only two nations in the Western world that allows direct-to-consumer pharmaceutical ads (high five New Zealand!), I’ve been led to believe that most of our problems can be solved through pills. Alicia Keys wouldn’t have as hard a time sleeping with a broken heart if she had a stronger prescription.
Pop a few of mother’s little helpers and you’ll be able to tranquilize those fragile feelings and get on with your life. In time you’ll emotionally buck up, or perhaps those suppressed sentiments will just manifest themselves into a physical ailment and you can go see a real doctor. Either way, it’s an improvement.
